A: Tanya’s son is growing into a bright and handsome young man.

Bad Egg (Trứng ung)
Ý nghĩa: Bất hảo, Cá biệt đối với mọi người
Câu mẫu: I don’t want my little brother hanging around with the bad eggs in his class. (Tôi không muốn em trai tôi quanh quẩn với những thành phần xấu trong lớp.)

A: Have you heard? Zeus was in trouble again?

Big Cheese
Ý nghĩa: một người rất quan trọng
Câu mẫu: Mr. Gomez is the big cheese of Goldwire Industries. (Ông Gomez là một người rất quan trọng của Goldwire Industries.)

A: How was the interview?
B: I was a bit surprised by what happened.
A: So, what happened?

Butter Someone Up
Ý nghĩa: đối xử tốt với ai đó (thường là vì những lý do ích kỷ) nịnh bợ
Câu mẫu: We have to butter Mark up before telling him about the bad news. (Chúng ta phải nói tốt về Mark lên trước khi nói với anh ấy về tin xấu.)
A: Are you free this long weekend?
B: Yeah, why?
A: My family and I will go camping. Do you want to come with us? My cousins will be there, too.
B: Hmm, I’m not sure.
A: Come on! It would be fun.
B: I bet it is but the thing is… my Mom doesn’t like the idea of me going to the wilderness.

Cool as a Cucumber (Mát như dưa leo)
Ý nghĩa: rất thoải mái
Câu mẫu: David is as cool as a cucumber (David đang cảm thấy rất thư giãn)

A: It’s hell week again. I badly stop looking at my social media and study.
B: As we should. Stanley, get off your computer and study with us.
A: Come on! Everything will be alright.
B: You being as cool as cucumber won’t make you pass the exams. So, stop fooling around.
Cup of Joe
Ý nghĩa : một tách cà phê
Câu mẫu: Let’s grab a cup of Joe after (Hãy lấy một cốc cà phê đi nào)

A: Our schedule nowadays is too hectic.
B: You can say that again! I automatically feel sleepy by just merely looking at this pile of unfinished projects.
A: How about getting a cup of Joe before we continue.
B: I surely wanted that.
Cry Over Spilled Milk
Ý nghĩa: buồn phiền về một điều gì đó đã xảy ra và không thể thay đổi được.
Câu mẫu: It’s lost. Let’s just get a new one; there’s no use crying over spilled milk (Nó bị mất. Hãy chỉ lấy một cái mới; Không có ích gì khi khóc vì chuyện đã rồi)

A: I could have gotten that scholarship if I had just gotten in the interview on time.
B: Oh, what happened?
A: There was a car accident that day which caused heavy traffic.

Có nghĩa là: một cái gì đó bạn không thích thú.
Câu mẫu: Scuba-diving is not really my cup of tea. (Lặn biển không hẳn là gu của tôi.)

Câu văn mẫu: Angelo is a hard nut to crack when something is bothering him like this. (Angelo là một người khó hiểu khi có điều gì đó làm phiền anh ấy như thế này.)

A: Have you seen Angelo? I have been looking for him.
B: Why? Is there any problem?

Piece of Cake
Ý nghĩa: rất dễ dàng, dễ như ăn bánh
Câu mẫu: The exam was a piece of cake. ( Bài thi dễ như ăn bánh vậy đó)
Hộp thoại Mẫu:
A: How was your exam?
B: It was terrible. I really don’t have enough time to study so I crammed. And yours?
A: I thought the exam would be that difficult but it turns out that it’s just a piece of cake.
B: Good for you. It seems like you studied hard for it.
A: I did. In fact, I had been studying two weeks before the exam. Maybe, you should know your priorities, too. Partying and cramming will really not lead you to anywhere.
